Felt Rose Mini Frame

I had this mini frame which was cute but it had no pop to it.  So, I grabbed some felt and decided to make a mini felt roses and attach it around the frame and I think it turned out beautifully ...

Here's a quick tutorial on how I did it...

Cut small felt circles.  Does not need to be perfect circles.
Fold circle in half and start rolling from one end.  Glue together.
Glue onto the frame.

See ... wasn't that easy?  Now it has some "pop" to it!

How to make T-Shirt Yarn

Have you seen those fettuccini or zpaghetti yarns?  Have you seen their prices? Wow! All they are are just jersey fabric cut into strips.  Jersey fabric = t-shirts!  So if you have t-shirts you are no longer using, here's a great way to recycle them!  Make them into t-shirt yarns to knit or crochet with.  How much fun will that be!  All the things you can create!!

Here is a link to a fantastic tutorial on how to make t-shirt yarn by MaDonna Sheehy from Shirts.com.  http://www.shirts.com/blog/p-487-DIY-t-shirt-yarn.aspx

Toxic Free DIY Dryer Sheets

Hello again!

So besides crafting, I'm also really into the a natural way of living.  I try (keyword - TRY) to avoid chemicals as much as possible.  It's not easy as it is in everything around us, but I try to minimize the exposure to it for myself and the kids.

Well, I found this recipe for a DIY dryer sheet that is chemical free ... so natural, and it is supposed to leave your clothes softer and smelling better (depending on the essential oil scent you use).  I haven't tried this myself but it intrigued me enough to share it with you and I do plan on making it and trying it out.  If you try it before me, can you let me know how it worked for you?

You'll save so much money with homemade dryer sheets! #eco:

I'm a new addict to crochet - Slouch Hat

Ok.  So on my last post (back in October - eek), I showed you guys Star Wars crochet items.  Well, guess who got hooked on all things crochet.  Me!!!  Now I also hoard yarn.  Oh my!  It's fun to crochet but truth be told, I'm still inpatient. I have no interest in making huge blankets or clothes ... takes too long.  I like something that finishes up quick and with crochet, really, nothing is quick.  So maybe I should say, works up quicker.  So I make smaller items which I will be sharing with you.

Here's one of the first bigger, but quicker projects that I made.  It's a slouch hat for my lil' man.  I think it turned out pretty well for a newbie.  What do you think?

Thanks for looking!  Feel free to comment but please be nice! :-)

Star Wars and Crochet - Who knew?

So crochet is not my expertise and Star Wars is not my ultimate thing but after hanging out with my friend Kim, who is an expert at crochet and a large fan of Star Wars, I'm starting to get the bug.  So I stalked it out on Pinterest and look at some of the fun stuff I found!!!

Found these cute character creations here.

Oh I need this Death Star Cushion!  Anyone want to make me one?  :-)  Instructions are here.

And these lightsabers!  I'm just dying over here!  Wow!  Find the pattern here.

Can't forget about this guy!  What a cutie!  He's here.

Of course, let's not forget all the main characters.  Look how awesome!  There was no tutorial for these that I found but you could probably buy the pattern off of etsy somewhere.  Mergirl had made these and was showing it off on her flickr page here.

I now want so badly to learn how to do crochet on the next level and watch all the episodes of Star Wars before the new movie comes out this December.  If only I didn't need to sleep, I MIGHT find the time to learn and make all these wonderful guys!

It's a Perler Bead thing!

As I was perusing Pinterest, I came across a few Perler Bead artwork. It totally brought me back almost 30 years when I was first introduced to perlers. I found a large bag of these colorful beads in the scout shop of the headquarters of the Boy Scouts of America where my grandfather worked. I had no clue what they were but the colors and the fact they were beads attracted me so I bought them. Flash forward 30 years and I still love them like I did back then, I just forgot. So thanks Pinterest for reminding me and giving me that warm feeling as I remember my wonderful grandfather, Godofredo Neric.

Inspired by the great perler artists on Pinterest, I started with this...

Yup! My inner geek is showing. So then I tried these...

Then I thought about my lil' man's teacher, so made these...

Then I thought about my good friend who sews...

Then my lil' man saw a creeper with a Christmas hat and asked for one ....

Hmmm... Christmas is coming! Let's make ornaments but the geek kind...

Which then lead to more ornies...

Even Minion ornies...

And finally, since football season is coming, a few Baltimore Ravens perler ornies with a bonus owl...

I sure did have fun with these! No worries. I'm not done yet. I want to make some splatoon squid earrings and ornies, a few Dr. Who, maybe some Avengers, and Adventure Time also. One day I will attempt to make a large Perler bead mural wall art of Jeremy Renner. *sigh*

Splatoon craze!

Yes, yes! It's been over a year! What can I say ... Life! I was super busy but just 2 weeks ago something happened that made me stop everything in an instant. I had a stroke! Here I am in my mid forties, in rather good health and I get a stroke. How is this possible? Even the Drs don't understand why I had one but I did. So life changes are now happening. Quit 2 of the 3 jobs I had, crafting more, eating much healthier, starting an exercise regimen. However I still have 2 big stressors in my life that I need to change but am having great difficulty changing ... Finances and relationship. I need more of one and none of the other! While I try to figure that out, this girl will be crafting more to relieve stress.  So this is what I've been up to lately...

Splatoon Squids!!!  Aren't they adorbs? My kids are really into splatoon right now
so I made these cute keychains.

I couldn't decide if I should put spots on them or not so I took a Facebook and
Instagram vote and surprisingly enough, it was half and half!

Then I asked do I put felt spots or just draw them on.
Split decision as well. So I just made a mixture of them all.  Lol!

And here are my babies!

Giant Birthday Candles

In case you didn't know, I am now a birthday party host for Jo-Ann's Fabrics and Crafts.  Well, over the weekend we had an open house to promote the classes and birthday party services offered at Jo-Ann's.  I wanted to make sure my part of the table stood out, so I made 3 giant birthday candles to sit on my end.

I came across the idea on pinterest (which originated from here). I didn't create mine the same way she did but the end result was about the same.  Here's how I did mine...

Giant cardboard tubes
(I got mine from Jo-Ann's for free - these are the long sturdy tubes that
come from the home decor fabrics once the fabric has all been bought)
White acrylic paint
Duct tape (in the color you want)
Yellow and Orange Foam Sheet
Foam sheet matching the color of your duct tape
White Felt
White Pipe Cleaner
.5 yards of Tulle (matching the color of the duct tape)
Foam brush
CD
glue gun
hacksaw

Begin with figuring out how tall you want your candle or candles.  Use the hacksaw to cut the desired length to your candle.  Now paint the entire tube with white acrylic paint. If you want, you can seal the paint with an acrylic sealer once it is dry. I didn't seal mine.
Now that it is dry, apply the colored duct taped at an angle starting at the very top and wrapping it all the way down to the bottom.  Make sure to let the duct tape have a wide enough angle to leave parts of the white showing through when it wraps around the tube.
Get the CD and place your duct tape wrapped tube on top in the middle part of the CD.  Take small, long strips of duct tape and tape the ends of the tube to the CD.  Do it all around the bottom part.  In this case, less is not more as you want that tube not to be able to tilt over and separate easily from the CD.

The picture above doesn't look like I put a lot of duct tape at the bottom, but trust me I did.  The picture was taken in the early stages of my attaching the 2 together.

From here I decided to make the flame.  I used yellow and orange foam and just freehandedly cut out a flame shape. I cut 2 of each color.  Make sure the yellow part matches up as you will be sandwiching the pipe cleaner in between the yellow part.  Once everything is cut, first hot glue the pipe cleaner to the inside of the yellow foams then hot glue the yellow foam together.  Now hot glue the orange foam flame shape to both sides of the yellow foam flame.
Take the white felt and trace the top of the tube onto the felt.  Cut out that circle and make a small slit in the center of that felt circle.  Insert the pipe cleaner into the slit and then bend the pipe cleaner into an "L" shape right at the base of the underneath side of the felt. From there just wrap the pipe cleaner into a circle shape and hot glue it to the felt. This makes the felt sturdier and stronger.
Hot glue the circle felt onto the top of the tube.
It is now time to cover up the ugliness of the CD and all that duct tape mess at the bottom.  NOTE: It's probably best to do this part BEFORE you make and attach the flame but if you didn't, no worries ... it still works.  You're going to take your same color as the duct tape foam and trace the CD onto the foam and cut out.

Now cut a bunch of slits in the middle (star like slits).  Make sure it's big enough because you are going to feed the tube through this slit.  It has to fit the flame first then the tube.
Hot glue the circle parts of the foam to the CD and the slit peaks onto the tube.
Take your matching color tulle and cut it into squares about 5x5 or 6x6.  I didn't do exact measurements, just kind of eyeballed the cut.  That's just how I fly.  :-)
Take a square tulle and place your finger in the middle of the square.  Pull up the sides to cover up your finger and then holding the tip of the tulle where the tip of your finger is, remove your finger.

Pinch that tip and add hot glue all around it.  You will now apply it quickly to the base of the tube to hide all that hot mess at the bottom of the tube.
Repeat the process of the tulle until you have covered up the whole bottom.
Once it is all covered, then you are DONE!  Enjoy the cute creation!!!
Here's my end of the table.  You can also get an idea of how big these candles are with this picture.  I'm only 5'2".
Hope you enjoyed!  I know I did.  :-)
